Primary Boys Football Leagues 2022-23

Year 5/6 Boys

All Manchester Schools are invited to take part in the annual Year 5/6 Boys’ Football Leagues.  Entries are invited from the end of the previous school year, with information and league details formalised and sent out in September.  The leagues then commence in October every academic year with schools arranging their own fixture dates/venues.

If you would like to take part or require any further details, please contact Simon Jones.

There are 2 distinctly different types of participation and when entering schools may select which is most appropriate:

EXCEL:- League system which is initially organised geographically and is competitive, results are recorded, creating league tables which are published via Koboca.  For 2022/23 teams are entered into one of the 8 local leagues and play each other once, the top placed teams go forward to a knockout phase culminating in a Manchester Final.

INSPIRE:- This format is designed to encourage participation at a lower level of performance, There are no league tables or results published, however, results are kept for monitoring purposes only.  Inspire teams are also grouped geographically; the focus though is on enjoyment and learning, not the result. Students in the Inspire section may be less competent or confident in the sport.

All matches, Excel & Inspire, should be played 9 a side on small sided pitches, the full format is outlined below.

Primary Boys Y5/6 Football Leagues 2022-23

The league has grown again this year with 85 Manchester School Teams taking part during 2022-23, (51 Excel & 34 Inspire). The league has been designed to be easy to take part in and manage with a focus on enabling the players to enjoy matches against other local schools teams.

EXCEL League Format

  • Teams may be comprised of boys only or mixed gender, from Y5 and or Y6
  • 9 a-side games on a small sided pitch – you may have to contact your local secondary school in order to utilise one of their pitches, if you do not have access to one of your own
  • Teams will play each other once during the season – venue and fixture date will be negotiated by the 2 opponents
  • The offside rule does not have to be administered during the league games. However, if both teams agree it is better to administer it – it will be in operation for the play-offs
  • Refereeing responsibility will also be negotiated between the opponents – schools may wish to ask their local secondary school to provide a Young Official for the fixture
  • For the play-offs, the home team will be expected to appoint, and pay for, a neutral referee as their opponents will have travel costs
  • All results will be sent to Simon Jones and will be displayed on the website
  • At the end of the season there will be a play-off between the winners from each ‘zone’, with medals for the eventual winners and runners-up

INSPIRE fixtures are arranged in exactly the same way as EXCEL, venue, fixture date and refereeing responsibility will be negotiated by the 2 opponents. Schools have the option to play as many or as few games as they wish as there are no results or league tables published.  Results are collected for monitoring purposes but as these are not published they will not appear on Koboca.
